Rivers Of Himachal Pradesh

There are five major Rivers flowing through Himachal Pradesh which provide water to both the Indus & the Ganges basins

BEAS

  • RIVER NAME    BEAS
  • VEDIC NAME-    Arjikiya
  • SANSKRIT NAME   Vipasa
  • ORIGIN   -From Beas Kund in the Pir Panjal range near the Rohtang Pass (3978 mtrs.)
  • TRIBUTARIES -Parbati ,Hurla Sainj Uhl,Suketi, Luni,Binwa, Chakki,Gaj, Naugal,  Dehar
  • SALIENT FEATURES
  • Flows 256km in Himachal
  • Catchment area in H.P. is 1200Sqkm
  • Enters Distt. Mandi at Bajaura and leaves Mandi at Sandhol to enter Kangra.
  • Flows from east to west between Indora & Mirthal.
  • – Enters Punjab at Mirthal in distt. Kangra
  •  Merges into river Sutlej at Hari Ka Pattan in Ferozpur Distt. Of Punjab

Chenab 

  • VEDIC NAME-    Askni
  • SANSKRIT NAME-Chandra Bhaga
  • ORIGIN   -Formed by the confluence of Chandra & Bhaga stream at Tandi (in Lahaul) which arises from the opposite sides of Baralacha pass.
  • TRIBUTARIES-Saicher, Nullah,Miyar, Nullah,
  • SALIENT FEATURES 
  • Flows 122 km. in Himachal
  • Catchment area in H.P. is 7500 Sqkm
  • Enters Pangi Valley of Distt Chamba at Bhujind.
  • Leaves Distt. Chamba at Sansari Nala to enter Poddar Valley of Kashmir
  • Largest River of H.P in terms of Volume of water

Ravi

  • RIVER NAME   Ravi
  • VEDIC NAME-Purushni
  • SANSKRIT NAME-Iravati
  • ORIGIN -Rises in Bara Banghal (Distt.Kangra) as a joint stream formed by glacier fed Bhadal and Tantgiri.
  • TRIBUTARIES -Bhadal, Siul,Baira, Tantgiri,Chirchind Nullah
  • SALIENT FEATURES  -Flows 158 km in Himachal Catchment area in H.P. 5451 Sqkm.
  • Alexander called it Hydraster or Rhouadis.
  • Chamba Town lies on its right Bank
  •  Leaves Disttn Chamba at Kheri to enter J & K
  • Merges with Chenab in Pakistan
  • Separates Pirpanjal range from Dhauladhar

Satluj

  • RIVER -Satluj
  • VEDIC Name -Shatadru
  • ORIGIN-From Rakastal near Man Sarovar lake in Tibet as L o g c h h e w Khabab river.
  • TRIBUTARIES-Baspa, spiti Nogli, Solan,
  • SALIENT FEATURES
  • Flows 320 km in Himachal
  • Longest river in Himachal
  • Catchment area in H.P is 20000Sqkm
  •  Enters H.P (Distt. Kinnaur) at Khabab river. Shipkila (6608 mtrs.)
  • Enters Distt. Bilaspur at Kasol & leaves near Neila.
  • Enters Distt. Shimla at Chaura – Leaves Himachal at Bhakhra to enter Punjab. 
  • Asia’s highest gravity dam Bhakhra was constructed on this rive in 1963.
  • Largest artificial lake Gobind Sagar (168 Sqkm.) is also on this river. – 
  • It finally merges with the Indus river.

Yamuna

  • RIVER – Yamuna
  • VEDIC-  Kalindi
  • ORIGIN- From Yamunotri In Garhwal Hills of Uttrakhand
  • TRIBUTARIES  – Tons, Pabbar,Giri, Andhra, Bata, Jalal
  • SALIENT FEATURES
  • Shortest river in Himachal
  • Catchment area in H.P is 2320-Sqkm.
  • Enters H.P at Khadar Majri in Distt Sirmour
  • Easternmost river of Himachal
  • Has Mythical relation to the ‘Sun’
  • Largest tributary of Ganga river
  • Leaves H.P near Tejewala to enter Haryana
  • Tons River forms a Natural Bound- ary between H.P Uttrakhand
